BSP70 - Load-bearing Impermeable Jello-Mud Additive
BSP70 is an additive created through rigorous and continuous testing by Balsam Laboratory. Able to combat different working conditions, BSP70 is mixed with high-quality bentonite to form Jello-Mud — a lubricating, load-bearing, water-proofing, pressure-holding Jello-like slurry. Thus resulting in a highly adaptable, stable product. Adding BSP70 to bentonite will demonstrate a stronger plasticity as compared to traditional bentonite slurries, and thus is less prone to friction loss, all the while maintaining a higher load-bearing capacity and water-proofing capability.

BSP70, as a polymer, is primarily used to formulate Jello-Mud by combining it with bentonite slurry. Mostly utilized to fill the gaps around the shield during tunnelling, Jello-Mud effectively prevents and controls settlement during the excavation process. Additionally, it provides lubrication, friction-reduction between the stratum and the shield, and waterproofing when the TBM repositions.
For optimal preparation, it is recommended to mix BSP70 into pre-mixed bentonite slurry.
Jello-Mud is simple to use in operations, being easily injectable from the radial injection holes on the pipe joint or shield body. It has optimized gel cohesion rate and will not quickly dissipate from the injection point into the surrounding soil. The Jello-like slurry has water resistance properties and resists dilution even after prolonged immersion in water.
In addition, Jello-Mud exhibits anti-settlement and support capabilities to prevent soil from sinking too quickly, along with lubrication and anti-friction effects, which can reduce the shear stress between the shield or pipe sections and the soil, and effectively reduce the thrust force. Jello-Mud will not harden and solidify, which can prevent the shield from becoming stuck due to hardening.
BSP70 is mixed with bentonite slurry until thoroughly incorporated in a regular bentonite tank under 10 minutes, creating a consistent texture and clean work environment. There is no need to wait for the bentonite to hydrate. The slurry is then pumped directly into the shield’s radial injection holes.
There are many benefits to using Jello-Mud in your tunnel-boring project, including but not limited to:
Strong resistance to water, promotes cohesion and resistance to dissipation
Strong load-bearing capacity
Reduce frictional resistance and lubricating properties
Settlement prevention
Waterproofing the shield body
Resistance to hardening and solidifying
