Jello-Mud - Next Generation Lubricating Impermeable Annular Grout System

Jello-Mud is the next generation lubrication material developed for shielded tunnelling, micro-tunnelling, pipe-jacking, and other trenchless construction applications. Injected into the annular space between the TBM mid-shield/ pipe segment and surrounding ground, it creates a stable, cohesive layer that performs three essential functions:

  • Lubrication: Reduces pipe-to-soil friction and helps control thrust/jacking forces over long distances.

  • Settlement control: Fills and supports the annular space, limiting ground loss and helping prevent surface settlement—especially important beneath airports, roads, residential areas, and other settlement-sensitive infrastructure.

  • Water intrusion control: Forms a low-permeability barrier that seals potential flow paths and helps block high-pressure groundwater from entering the tunnel or working area.

Unlike conventional slurries that may dilute, migrate, or wash away, Jello-Mud is designed to remain stable in permeable, water-bearing ground such as sand, silt, or clay. Its long-lasting performance helps maintain lubrication, ground support, and water control throughout extended construction periods.

  • Passes 5-bar 31-day Constant Water Pressure Test

  • Jello-Mud was selected as the lubricating slurry for the world-record-setting Ligang Water Intake Tunnel: a 3,214.96 m single-drive pipe-jacking project constructed using DN 2600 steel pipes. Although more than ten intermediate jacking stations were planned, the entire drive was completed without using a single one.
